BEYOND OCCUPY: AN MLK DIALOGUE FOR 2012

Monday, January 16, 2012

2:00pm until 6:00pm

RedLine Denver - 2350 Arapahoe Street, Denver, CO 80205

In 2011, the Occupy Movement sent the message loud and clear: the 99 percent has had enough of corporations hijacking our economy, politics, media, and diet. In the spirit of Dr. King and the civil rights legacy, we recognize that many communities have been fighting this fight since the beginning of "America".
In 2012, it’s up to us to come together and start building and creating solid alternatives.
Join Redline, The GrowHaus, and a host of hip-hop artists and community activists on MLK day for an interactive afternoon of live art, fresh food, conversation and action steps towards building a Denver that’s for the people, ALL PEOPLE, sustainably.
Bring the whole family for community dialogue, spoken word, video, skill-sharing, healthy food, and opportunities to get involved! Activities will be available for children and adults of all ages.
This event grew out of a series of Denver Hip-Hop singles released during the fall of 2011 involving Mane Rok, Dyalekt, Molina, Jonny 5 of the Flobots, Aja Black of the Reminders, Kalyn Heffernan of WheelChair Sports Camp, Diles, DJ Icewater, Bravo One, and Es Nine. These three singles served as a bridge between the people organizing and facilitating the Occupy Movement and folks on the outside, curious about Occupy and questioning what this "Movement" was all about.
Molina and Mane Rok met to discuss Occupy, what it meant to the people, and what could grow out of the release of this music. They then connected with Jonny 5 of the Flobots and Adam Brock from the Growhaus to build an event that has become much bigger than Hip-Hop or Occupy. With the support of P.J. D'Amico and Louise Martorano of the Redline gallery space, the organizing team of Denver activists has grown to several dozen.

International Water Advocates Speak on Water Security

January 27-29 in Denver

Denver, Colo (January 3, 2012) – The Downstream Neighbor celebrates water as a connector, spiritual inspiration, and nurturance for our lives and explores some of the best practices for protecting water for the benefit of future generations, in a symposium January 27-29, 2012 in Denver.

This extraordinary weekend symposium brings together people from all walks of life in dialogue around the Front Range connection to the South Platte watershed. Critical conversations about our water future will be guided and inspired by international voices for Earth, water, and human rights: Maude Barlow and Elizabeth Peredo Beltrán.

The symposium takes the view that by considering Colorado water in the context of the cosmos, the global hydrologic cycle, and the entire family of life on Earth, we can better understand our home watershed and face what we must do to be responsible to the downstream neighbor.

The symposium opens Friday afternoon at 4 pm at the Theater at Colorado Heights University with a screening of Journey of the Universe. Written by religion scholar Mary Evelyn Tucker and mathematical cosmologist Brian Thomas Swimme, this film establishes an inspiring context for the beginning weeks of Colorado Water 2012.

At 7 pm on Friday, January 27, keynote speaker Maude Barlow—National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians and chair of the board of Washington-based Food and Water Watch—will present the relationship of water to the entire family of life on Earth, valuing water as a commons, and intrinsic right, and a public trust.

At 8:30 am on Saturday, January 28, the Bolivian civic leader, Elizabeth Peredo Beltrán will speak in celebration of water as a common good and a human right. “The planet is not a resource, it is our home,” Beltran emphasizes.

The Saturday session will include regional and local experts on a range of topics that increasingly focus on our home watershed the South Platte, how we may become more connected with the river and what the river needs to flourish. Saturday topics include the cosmic origins of water, deep transition, water ethics, water and food justice, respecting nature’s ways in our approaches to solving the water crisis, getting involved in watershed groups, and the nexus between water and energy choices such as coal, natural gas, and renewables.

Sunday’s session beginning at 12 noon engages participants in further discussion on concerns like those that brought the conference planning committee together. For our watershed—like most of Earth—faces a water crisis:

· Much of our water comes from another watershed—and partly as a result, a major river no longer reaches the sea.

· More water has been promised than can be delivered.

· Controversial water uses greatly diminish the water available to farmers, a swelling human population, and the rest of nature.

Yet, the waters flowing in and through our watershed belong to Earth, to all species, to future generations.

The symposium will close with an opportunity for participants to inspire one another and become more aware of the great shift required as old notions of “separation from nature” slip away.

· What are the urgent concerns of our near and farther neighbors?

· What does it mean for the public to own the water?

· What does water need from us?

· How does water connect us, inspire us?

We are all downstream neighbors.

The International Voices

Maude Barlow is founding member of the San Francisco–based International Forum on Globalization and Councillor with the Hamburg-based World Future Council. Maude is the recipient of eleven honorary doctorates and many awards, including the 2011 EarthCare Award, the highest international honor of the Sierra Club (US). She has authored dozens of reports and 16 books, including the international best seller Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and The Coming Battle for the Right to Water.

Elizabeth Peredo Beltrán coordinates Bolivia’s annual Blue October celebration of water—a common good and a human right. She edited The Human Right to Water and Sanitation at the UN: Victory and Challenges for the Peoples of the World. Her book will be available for sale and signing. Elizabeth serves on the Latin American Committee for an International Tribunal on Climate Justice. She will address the Saturday session in Spanish, bringing the sounds, heart, and perspective of South America to Denver. Local songwriter and performer Elena Holly Klaver will interpret.

About The Downstream Neighbor

The Downstream Neighbor is a labor of love by residents of the South Platte watershed who wish to awaken regional participation in the year of Colorado Water 2012.

Initial commitments as sponsors of the symposium include the Loretto Earth Network, Transition Colorado, Sunflower Markets, Loretto Community, Colorado Heights University, Chipotle, St Mary’s Academy, Regis University Environmental Studies Program, Mercury Café, Loretto UN-NGO Office, Sargent Studios, The One World One Water Group, Practical Fractals, and some individuals.

The Loretto Community’s 200-year Jubilee inspired the symposium planning committee to create an opportunity for public dialogue about ethical values and ecological concerns. The symposium invites activists, scholars, experts, contemplatives, deep thinkers, practical folks, and kindred spirits of all varieties to participate in conversations about current water issues in our home watershed.

Charitable contributions may be made to the Sisters of Loretto to support the reasonable fee structure of the overall symposium and (should there be a surplus) future educational programs of a similar nature. The symposium also will present a tribute to the Loretto Community for their 200 years of service.
