FRIENDS! VIGIL CANCELLED TONIGHT DUE 2 6 DEGREE PROJECTED TEMP. Please join us in January!

The firtst Monday of each Month, at 6 p.m., the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) & Coloradans for Immigrant Rights sponsor a vigil at the Immigrant Detention Center in Aur...ora, Colorado.

In solidarity, Monday, January 2 Regis University Engaged Scholar Activists will co-sponsor the vigil as part of a year of dialogue and action on immigration and immigrant rights at the University. As students who are both affected either directly or indirectly by the issue of immigration, we believe in standing up and speaking out for change.

Please join us at the GEO Detention Center at 30th Avenue and Peoria Street in Aurora. Dress warm and bring hats, scarves, mittens, and warm coats! Perhaps even bring an extra pair for a friend in need that evening! We promise to stand together to generate warmth in our hearts and heat around this issue. And we'll have hot chocolate and cider to help!

DIRECTIONS: The vigil will start at the Northwest corner of 30th Avenue and Peoria Street in Aurora. Take I?70 to Peoria, head South on Peoria to 30th Avenue. We will walk from Peoria and 30th Avenue north to 31st Avenue and go West on 31st to see the expansion of the detention center. We will then walk around to the front of the detention center to stand in solidarity, share sentiments, and make some noise.

If you'd like to catch a ride from Regis University, we've got plenty of space and will be leaving from lot 3 at the student center on 50th and Lowell at 5.15 pm. Reserve a spot by contacting Melissa mnix@regis.edu or 303.458.4217.

Looking forward to being with you!

Renewing Our Commitment to transform our immigration system and our society

Renovando nuestro compromiso de transformar nuestro sistema migratorio y nuestra sociedad

Think on what your New Year's Resolution for action will be. We'll share our resolutions and make a banner of them together so we can remember and be accountable to one another. The banner will be the backdrop for a future action...

After 1 year of monthly vigils we have grown from 5 hearty individuals to 260!

We have to ask:

Should our monthly vigils at Geo immigrant detention center continue?

What should the next 6 months look like?

How can YOU help?

If you are interested, we need you and your friends, faith community or organization to do TWO things:

1)    Come to our planning meeting on Tuesday, June 23rd from 5:15pm to 7:00pm

At the AFSC office: 901 W. 14th Avenue, Suite 7, Denver, CO 80204

AND

2)    Respond to jpiper@afsc.org if your group would like to sponsor (plan the program with our help) a monthly faith action.

We need a group to step up by June 6th  to help with July’s vigil if we want to have a vigil in July. Respond to jgarcia@afsc.org if you can plan July’s vigil.

We have built a strong and diverse community of people

who have promoted and performed faith and human rights based messages throughpoetry, spoken word, music, theater and art and

continued to raise the profile on the unjust detention of our immigrant brothers and sisters.

Over the last six months, the following groups sponsored a vigil with the assistance of the American Friends Service Committee:

-          No More Deaths Denver

-          Iglesia del Cristo El Shaddai

-          10:30 Catholic Community

-          St. Andrews United Methodist Church

-          Coloradans for Immigrant Rights

-          The Romero Troupe

With constant support, representation from, and assistance with security by: Comite Defensa del Pueblo/Committee in Defense of the People and Comunidad Liberacion/Liberation Community and many others.

In order to maintain this amazing momentum and build a more powerful and strategic movement together,

we need YOU, your ideas and your suggestions for Improvement

-          No Más Muertes, Denver

-          Iglesia del Cristo El Shaddai

-          10:30 Catholic Community

-          St. Andrews United Methodist Church

-          Coloradans for Immigrant Rights

-          The Romero Troupe

Comite Defensa del Pueblo/Committee in Defense of the People and Comunidad Liberación/Liberation Community y muchas otras personas.
